I returned to China on a flight from New York to Beijing but was transferred directly to Hohhot for 14 days of incoming Covid quarantine. Except for the most basic survival activities, there was a long silence in this quarantine room, and the sound of heartbeats and breathing was harsh in the silence. I improvised a "jailbreak" with limited tools and the leftover balloons from my previous work, letting my breath escape from the room.

Within a week of the end of my quarantine, the government shortened the incoming Covid quarantine to 7 days.

By the end of 2022, the travel restrictions had isolated the world's most populous country for nearly three years. After a complicated and lengthy public struggle, the government began loosening restrictions in November. One month later, on December 26, China dropped Covid quarantine for incoming travelers. At that time, the number of international flights to China was 6 percent of what it was in 2019, according to the flight tracker VariFlight.
