Art Practices under the Postponement
The stop-and-go between pandemics reminds me of the Chinese word "Yan Dang," similar to "Delay." "Yan Dang" denies the rupture and acknowledges the suspension. When pronouncing the word, the tone's rise and fall always be strong—especially the fall tone with the feeling of a heavy blow. It seems to give imagery beyond the interpretation of "Delay." With the tone's rise and fall, like a hammer hitting a red-hot iron, the outer edge stretches, while the landing point is thinner and denser. The pandemic is recurring, acting like wrought iron on all walks of life. Continue, live, and develop, but endure the impact and then move forward.
The art world is no different. The past path has been potholed, and in the confines of a brief encounter with new problems, artists are bound to make changes as well. On the one hand, when "in-person" is blocked, what are the challenges to the " live" and " local" that performance, theater, and community artists/art organizations emphasize? On the other hand, how do new media and digital artists extend their artistic practices when the "network" is thickened into life during the pandemic? In this talk series, I will invite eight artists and organizers active in theater, performance, social practice, new media, and digital art to introduce their work status, methods, experiences, and reflections since the pandemic.
